Studying with a disability

We offer assistance and support to all students and prospective students with disabilities through our social and psychological counselling services, and we work closely with the universities. Suitable accommodation is also available at our Chemnitz and Zwickau campuses.

Students may have various health conditions, both visible and invisible. These conditions include, for example:

  • Chronic physical conditions (e.g., rheumatism, Crohn’s disease, or diabetes)

  • Dyslexia or dyscalculia

  • Mobility impairments

  • Mental health conditions

  • Vision, hearing, or speech impairments

  • Other conditions (e.g., cancer)

The participation of people with disabilities in education is enshrined in German law, including in the Basic Law (Grundgesetz) (Articles 3 and 20), the Higher Education Framework Act (Hochschulrahmengesetz) (§2(4)), the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Behindertenrechtskonvention der Vereinten Nationen), the respective state higher education laws (Landeshochschulgesetze), and examination regulations (Prüfungsordnungen).

Where can I find further support and resources?

The Chemnitz-Zwickau Student Service Organisation offers help and support to all students and prospective students with disabilities through its social and psychological counselling services, and works closely with the universities. In addition, suitable accommodation is available on the Chemnitz and Zwickau campuses. Staff members can also contact the counselling centres for information.

The Chemnitz University of Technology (TU Chemnitz) offers counselling for students and prospective students with disabilities. For students at the Zwickau University of Applied Sciences (WH Zwickau), information and support are available through the representative for the interests of people with disabilities.

The Information and Counselling Centre for Studies and Disabilities (IBS) of the German Student Services (Deutsches Studierendenwerk) offers comprehensive information and counselling on studying with a disability. (Handbook "Studying and Disabilities").
