BAföG

We process BAföG applications for students at Chemnitz University of Technology, West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau, and the Saxony Cooperative State University, as well as for students, secondary school pupils, and interns in Eastern European countries.

Depending on the location of the university, the degree programme and personal needs, the average cost of living for students varies significantly. On average, students in Germany spend well over 1,000€ per month on rent and utilities, textbooks, clothing, insurance, food and other personal expenses.

If you are unable to cover these costs yourself or with your parents’ help, you have the option to apply for financial support under the Federal Training Assistance Act, better known as “BAföG.”

BAföG is the most affordable way to fund a university education, because:

  • During the standard period of study, half of the BaföG is provided as an interest-free loan, and the other half as a grant.
  • Over the course of a five-year degree programme, you could receive more than 60,000€, for example.
  • But you only have to pay back a maximum of 10,010€, interest-free—the rest is free!
  • Repayment begins 5 years after graduation in small monthly instalments of 130€.

The amount of financial aid is tailored to your personal circumstances in accordance with legal requirements. So don’t compare yourself to others—submit your own application! Even a small grant can offer many benefits, such as exemption from the TV licence fee.

Two-thirds of students eligible for BAföG currently do not apply—simply because they do not know they are eligible! Be smarter! You’ll likely get more than you think. That’s why our tip is: Apply for BAföG!
