What sort of issues can I discuss with social services?

As a student services organisation, we support you in your daily life as a student. Our student counselling service offers guidance and support for difficult academic or personal situations and helps you find solutions to personal, academic, social or financial problems. Our services are primarily designed to help you help yourself.

The main areas of our counselling include:

  • Pregnancy and Studying with a Child
  • Students with disabilities or chronic illnesses
  • International students
  • Student finance
  • Part-time jobs whilst studying
  • Health and Long-Term Care Insurance
  • Social security benefits
  • Communication with government agencies
  • Broadcasting licence fee
  • Discounts, and much more

Even if we can't help you directly, we usually know of somewhere you can turn to that we can recommend.

What is the difference between social counselling and psychological counselling?

The Social Counselling Service offers assistance with practical issues relating to your daily life as a student. In other words, if you have questions about paying your next rent, your job, the TV licence fee, studying whilst pregnant or with a child, or your next appointment at the immigration office, please feel free to contact the Social Counselling Service.

Psychological Counselling, on the other hand, offers you help and support in dealing with stress, pressure and difficult situations in your studies and daily life. If, for example, you’re having trouble focusing on your next assignment, the thought of your next exam is keeping you up at night, or student life is starting to feel increasingly overwhelming, Psychological Counselling is the right place for you.

There may be some overlap here. So if you’re unsure which of the two counselling services you should visit, just contact us. We’re happy to help!

How do I make an appointment?

You do not need an appointment for our walk-in social counselling sessions. However, to keep waiting times reasonable for all students, we ask that you contact us during these hours only for brief enquiries or requests for information. Please be prepared for possible waiting times during these hours.

If you would like to discuss a more complex issue, you are welcome to email us in advance to arrange a private appointment. This will also save you the wait time.
