Thanks to millions in funding from the federal government, the Free State of Saxony and student services, over 1000 additional places in halls of residence can be renovated at various university locations in Saxony.

With the "Young Housing" program, the federal government is providing a total of 24.91 million euros for Saxony this year. The Free State is contributing 7.47 million euros and the student unions are contributing 15.12 million euros of their own funds. This means that 1005 places in halls of residence in Saxony can be modernized under the "Young Living" programme.

Due to the tight administration schedule of the funding program, Saxony is one of only two federal states that were able to draw down the funds this year. This was possible thanks to good and close coordination between the Studentenwerke and the Free State. For 2023, the Chemnitz-Zwickau Student Union will receive 9.9 million euros for the modernization of the Innere Schneeberger Str. 23 hall of residence in Zwickau.

Minister of Science Sebastian Gemkow: "Students from Germany and abroad are dependent on affordable accommodation. In addition to shared flats, our halls of residence are a good address and well-renovated or new places are therefore in particularly high demand. I am therefore very pleased that the Young Living programme will enable us to modernize over 1000 additional places in halls of residence. When it comes to attracting first-year students, our future skilled workers, we in Saxony have always scored highly in comparison with many regions in Germany thanks to our affordable rents and high supply rate. Modern and affordable accommodation in the halls of residence run by Saxony's student unions remains an important argument for studying in Saxony, alongside the high-quality education."

The federal government had announced that it would also provide funding for the "Young Housing" program for the 2024 and 2025 programme years. This would primarily address the need for additional student accommodation in Dresden and Leipzig.

Independently of the "Young Housing" program, the Free State is already supporting the Studentenwerke with investment funds for the renovation and new construction of student residences in the years.
